Lecture capture and retrieval tools are two sets of complementary tools often presented as a suite. Lecture capture tools perform live recordings of a lecture, including voice and relevant visual material, in as complete a manner as possible. Lecture retrieval tools aid the student in retrieving the whole lecture or the parts of the lecture relevant to his or her learning needs.

Benefits
When combined, these complementary modalities afford several benefits, including:

  • Opportunities for time-shifting, enabling students to review course content at will (or to view it for the first time if illness, work, or distance prevented in-person attendance) and capturing content for later broadcast from instructor(s) and/or guest lecturers in a manner that honors their busy schedules.
  • Persistence and flexibility. Captured content can be re-used by instructors in multiple contexts and combined, as needed, with an array of additional media. Whereas a captured lecture may serve as a study aid and a spur to memory in support of a face-to-face or blended course, that same lecture could be packaged with appropriate online learning activities and engagement tools to constitute a fully online course module.
  • Reach. In appropriate circumstances, the ability to capture lecture and demonstration content digitally affords opportunities to experiment with pedagogy, for example, "flipping" a course by asking students to view lecture materials online prior to a face-to-face course session in which they engage each other in discussion, collaborate to solve problem sets, etc.
