A student information system (SIS) is a software program that manages data about students. SIS applications have traditionally been developed in-house by higher education institutions or delivered as packaged solutions via a vendor. However, a new model of SIS is emerging which are developed via open source or community source and are non-proprietary platforms. An open source SIS has the potential to be tailored to fit the specific needs of each institution that implements it.

There are very few open source SIS platforms currently in use. The Kuali Foundation released its open source SIS module, Kuali Student, in January 2013. The Kuali Student module is or will be used by a number of partner institutions such as Indiana University and the University of Maryland.
