A student information system (SIS) is a software program that manages data about students. Higher education institutions around the world use SIS, which has created a need for the data contained in these systems to be standardized. This would enable the data to move between SIS platforms with greater ease (e.g., when students transfer credits from one institution to another).

International organizations, such as the IMS Global Learning Consortium and the Rome Student Systems and Standards Group, are in the early stages of initiating activities that focus on international SIS interoperability.
